Atomic Interactions at a Distance

چکیده

Van der Waals (vdW) forces are the dominant interactions between neutral particles on nanometer-tomicrometer length scales. This makes their effects ubiquitous in physics, chemistry, and biology: they are, for instance, responsible for the action of detergents, the selfassembly of viruses, and even the ability of geckos to climb flat surfaces. Their existence was first proposed by Johannes Diderik van der Waals in the late 19th century, as he developed an equation of state for gases and liquids that captures the gas-liquid transition and approximates the behavior of the liquid state. To derive his equation, van der Waals modified the ideal gas law by including an attractive interaction between molecules proportional to the inverse square of the gas volume, which suggested that the effective force between two neutral particles scales with their distance R as 1/R6.

Fundamental aspects of electric double layer force-distance measurements at liquid-solid interfaces using atomic force microscopy

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) force-distance measurements are used to investigate the layered ion structure of Ionic Liquids (ILs) at the mica surface. The effects of various tip properties on the measured force profiles are examined and reveal that the measured ion position is independent of tip properties, while the tip radius affects the forces required to break through the ion layers as wel...

Sensitivity analysis of a caliper formed atomic force microscope cantilever based on a modified couple stress theory

A relationship based on the modified couple stress theory is developed to investigate the flexural sensitivity of an atomic force microscope (AFM) with assembled cantilever probe (ACP). This ACP comprises a horizontal cantilever, two vertical extensions and two tips located at the free ends of the extensions which form a caliper. An approximate solution to the flexural vibration problem is obta...

Assessment of Nuclear Moisture Density Gauges at a Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory in Ghana during December 2015–December 2017

Introduction: Nuclear moisture density gauges are widely used in construction industry in different countries across the world, including Ghana, on a large scale. Like all irradiating devices, the nuclear gauges should be subjected to radiation safety assessment based on radiation protection and safety principles. Regarding this, the objective of this research was to i...

New constraints on ultrashort - ranged Yukawa interactions from atomic force microscopy ∗

Models in which the gravitational and gauge interactions are unified at ∼ 1 TeV lead to the possibility that large extra dimensions would produce Yukawa-type corrections to the Newtonian gravitational law at small distances. In some models with n = 3 extra dimensions, deviations from Newto-nian gravity would occur at separations ∼ 5 nm, a distance scale accessible to an atomic force microscope ...

A physical approach to reduce nonspecific adhesion in molecular recognition atomic force microscopy.

Atomic force microscopy is one of the few techniques that allow analysis of biological recognition processes at the single-molecule level. A major limitation of this approach is the nonspecific interaction between the force sensor and substrate. We have modeled the nonspecific interaction by looking at the interaction potential between a conical Si3N4 tip with a spherical end face and a mica su...
